Privacy Policy for Lingle
Effective date: October 4, 2026
Lingle by VAVA Graphics LLC (listed on Google Play as "Lingle: Easy Talk-To Translate") is an Android app made by VAVA Graphics LLC, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.
The short version
- No accounts. No sign-in. We never ask for your name, email address or phone number.
- No analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no crash reporting.
- We do not collect, sell or share personal data. We do not run a server for this app.
- Purchases go through Google Play. We never see your payment details.
What the app keeps, and where
Everything the app keeps stays on your phone:
- your language choices: the 3 free languages you picked and the date you picked them, and the last language pair you used
- how many of your free tries you have used for each Pro feature (scan, type, currency and other languages); these are plain counters on the phone
- simple app settings, such as the last screen you used and your currency choices
- the most recent exchange rates, so the currency screen works offline
- whether Pro is unlocked on this phone
- whether this phone supports AI summaries (checked once, on the phone)
- the translation language packs you have downloaded
None of this is sent to us. App backups are turned off, so this data is not copied to cloud backups. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data in Android settings deletes all of it.
Your voice and your text
- Speaking: when you hold the talk button, the app uses the speech recognition service built into your phone (for example Google's speech services or your phone maker's). That service turns your voice into text. Depending on your phone and settings, it may process the audio on its own servers, under that provider's privacy policy. The app receives only the resulting text. It does not record or keep audio.
- Offline speech engine: when you have no connection and your phone has no offline speech pack for a language, Lingle uses its own speech engine instead. It turns your voice into text entirely on your phone. The audio is never uploaded or saved, and is discarded as soon as the text is ready.
- Translating: translation runs on your phone using Google ML Kit. The text you say or type is not sent anywhere to be translated.
- Speaking the translation: the app uses your phone's built-in text-to-speech voice.
- Scanning menus and signs (Pro): photos you take or choose are read on your phone by Google ML Kit text recognition, which runs through Google Play services on the device. The language of the text is worked out on your phone by Google ML Kit language identification, and the text is then translated on the phone. Photos are never uploaded. A photo taken in the app is kept only in the app's private temporary storage until it is loaded, then deleted. The app does not ask for camera or photo-library permission: photos come from your camera app or from Android's photo picker, which share only the one photo you choose.
- AI menu summary (Pro, newer phones): on phones that support it, a short summary of a scanned menu is written on your phone by Gemini Nano through Android AICore, using Google ML Kit. The text never leaves the phone and no account or key is involved. On other phones this feature is simply hidden.
Text you say or type is shown on screen and is not saved after you leave it.
Internet connections the app makes
The app connects to the internet only for these things:
- Language packs. When you choose a language, the app gets it ready to work offline: its translation pack downloads from Google, and the app asks your phone's own speech and voice services to download their offline packs for that language. For languages written in Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Devanagari script, Google Play services downloads the text-reading model once. On phones with AI summaries, Android AICore manages the Gemini Nano model. Lingle also downloads its own offline speech model once, from our public GitHub page (github.com/vavagraphics/lingle). These downloads contain no information about you, and only languages you choose are downloaded. We have switched off the usage logging that ML Kit would otherwise send from the app.
- Exchange rates. When you open the currency screen and the saved rates are out of date, the app downloads the day's rates from ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com). The request contains no information about you. Like any website, their server can see the internet address the request comes from. We do not receive it.
- Google Play. Buying Pro, restoring a purchase and redeeming promo codes are handled by Google Play under Google's privacy policy. The app only asks Google Play whether Pro has been bought on your Google account. We never receive your name, email address or payment details.
Purchases and promo codes
Pro is a one-time purchase through Google Play. Because it is tied to your Google account by Google Play, reinstalling the app or using another phone with the same Google account restores it with no account of ours involved. Promo codes are redeemed in the Google Play Store.
Children
The app does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
